Oksunbong Peak, as beautiful as a blooming tree bud

(Eight Scenic Views of Danyang/National Scenic Site/Woraksan National Park)

옥순봉

Oksunbong Peak is named for its white and blue rocks that rise up to the sky like bamboo shoots. The rocky peak is so unique and beautiful that it is often referred to as the small Geumgang River, 'Sogeumgang'. The best way to enjoy it along the Danyang Gudambong Peak is to take a cruise or sightseeing boat on Chungjuho Lake. Especially during the fall foliage season, there are so many visitors that you can't get on the boat unless you book in advance.

Oksunbong Peak, too beautiful to give away

Oksunbong Peak was originally located in Cheongpung (now Jecheon), and there is an interesting story about how it came to be part of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang.
During the reign of King Myeongjong of the Joseon Dynasty, the late Toegye Yi Hwang, who was the governor of Danyang, asked the governor of Cheongpung to make Oksunbong Peak a part of Danyang, but he did not get an answer. He was reluctant to ask again, so he carved the words "Dangu Dongmun" on the stone wall of Oksunbong Peak, which means "Gateway to Danyang," and thus it became the gateway to Danyang. Unfortunately, the carvings were submerged in water when the Chungju Dam was completed in 1985.

Along with the nearby Gudambong Peak, it is a scenic spot that has been featured in the works of many poets and painters. Kim Il-son praised the scenery in "Yeojiseungram", and Lee Jung-hwan, who wrote "Taekriji", praised the scenic beauty of the area in "Sansurok".
