Chungcheongbuk-do Folklore Data No.3, Sansindang Shrin in Junkryeong, Danyang

죽령산신당

The Sansindang Shrine in Jukryeong, Danyang, dedicated to the Mountain God, is a place where the villagers hold the Jukryeong Sansinje ritual to honor Granny Dajagu. This tradition has been observed in Daegang-myeon since before and after the liberation, and nowadays, it is celebrated as a spring and autumn festival. Most mountain gods are male or tiger-related. Jukryeong Sansindang is a place dedicated to the indigenous Korean mountain god, serving the function of protecting the village and the temple. Located on the mid-slope of a mountain in Yongbuwon-ri village, this Sansindang Shrine, known as Jukryeong Sansindang Shrine, houses a memorial tablet inscribed with ‘Jungnyeong Sansin Jiwi’.

The locals refer to the Jukryeong Sansindang god as Granny Dajagu, and the building itself is called Dajagu Halmeonidang (Granny Dajagu Shrine). The story behind enshrining Dajagu as the Jukryeong Sansin God is as follows.

죽령산신당

In ancient times, bandits troubled the people day and night in this area. The terrain was rugged, making it difficult for the government army to subdue the bandits. At that time, a grandmother appeared and devised a plan. She entered the bandits' hideout and shouted 'Dajaguya' when the bandits were asleep, and 'Deoljaguya' when the thieves were awake. On the birthday night of the bandit leader, when they were all drunk and asleep, the grandmother shouted 'Dajaguya,' and upon hearing this, the government army was able to eradicate all the bandits. To honor the grandmother's merit, a shrine was built, and rituals were performed. Initially, the state held ceremonies in spring and autumn. During the Joseon era, a temple named Jukryeongsa was built, and the government directly conducted the ceremonies. However, the scale of the ceremonies has significantly reduced, and currently, the villagers hold a ceremony in March and September each year to pray for the well-being of the village.

The exact date of the shrine's establishment is unknown, but it was reconstructed on March 8, 1948, through the contributions of the residents. Although the scale of the ceremonies has diminished, a deep belief in the Jukryeong Sansindang Shrine persists among the locals.
