Waiting for a Thousand Years: Population of Spreading Yes in Sobaeksan Mountain, Danyang
Jumok, also known as the Korean yew tree, is said to live for a thousand years and endure for another thousand after death. Who is it waiting for so patiently, enduring harsh winds in life for a millennium and, even in death, not sleeping for a thousand years? Gazing upon the persistent population of Jumok that clings to the ridges of Sobaeksan Mountain, ranging from 1,200 to 1,400 meters above sea level, an endless question lingers in the heart.
Jumok was highly valued to the extent that it was used as a royal furniture material during the Joseon Dynasty. Due to its esteemed value, it was protected by royal decree, making it beyond the reach of the general public. It was only used in the gardens of grand residences and palaces. Particularly, the shape of the Jumok here is remarkably striking, with contoured branches shaped by the influence of wind and snow.
