Turtle Rock Reflected in the River Danyang Gudambong Peak

(Eight Scenic Views of Danyang/National Scenic Site/National Geopark/Woraksan National Park)

구담봉

Gudambong Peak, one of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang, was named "Gudam"*, meaning "turtle in the lake," because the reflection of the rocky cliffs in the river looks like a turtle's shell. Due to its name, Gudambong Peak is often misunderstood as 'Nine Peaks', composed of nine peaks.
* Gu: turtle, dam: lake

Gudambong Peak in Danyang is a majestic and beautiful peak on one of the most scenic spots of the rivers in Korea. The view is spectacular all year round, but it's especially not to be missed when the fall foliage is at its peak.

Route 36, which runs from Danyang-eup to Gudambong Peak, has been recognized as one of Korea's 100 Most Beautiful Roads. Earlier, Toegye Yi Hwang had praised that even China's "Sosangpalkyung*" could not be any better.
* Sosangpalkyung refers to eight landscapes spread over 700 kilometers around the Xiang River and its stream Xiao River, which flows into Dongzheng Lake in Hunan Province, China, and is said to depict not a specific place, but a variety of landscapes along the water that change with weather, season, and time.

To fully appreciate Danyang Gudambong Peak
Starting from Gyelanjae, you hike up and down a lovely trail for about an hour before reaching Gudambong Peak. Unfortunately, the summit is inaccessible, and it's hard to get a good view of the whole area. To fully appreciate Gudambong Peak, you need to take a cruise or a sightseeing boat from Janghoenaru. The best way to enjoy Gudambong Peak is to take in the views of Jebibong Peak, Geumsusan Mountain, Gangseondae, and the stem of Woraksan Mountain and reach out to it from a distance as if you were touching it.
Lee Ji-beon, the one who joined the gods
During the Joseon Dynasty, Lee Ji-beon, who was called the white-robed minister, stayed here and spent his time studying and soliciting, and tied arrowroot vines to both sides of Gudambong Peak to make cranes, so people called him Guseon (Gudambong Peak God). In the mystical atmosphere of Gudambong Peak, anyone could become a god and become a legend.
