A Journey to Danyang Along the Trail(Waterway)

A journey from Danyang Station, where clouds and winds take a rest...

길따라 떠나는 단양여행(기차편)

Take a special train trip to Danyang, a place with a history and tradition as rich as its natural beauty!

The Jungang Line, which travels from Cheongnyangni Station to Jecheon, reaches Danyang Station 20 minutes from there.

Danyang Station opened in 1942, but due to the construction of the Chungju Dam, parts of the area were submerged, in 1985, the station was rebuilt as Danyang Station and Gudanyang Station, with the latter becoming Danseong Station and the former being moved to its current location.

Danyang Station, which is surrounded by a large mountain range with the wide Namhangang River in front of it, receives more freight trains carrying cement than passengers, but the station itself does not feel empty or deserted. There is no room for loneliness amidst the magnificent nature around the station.

For a long time, it was the clouds and the breeze that came and went, and the beautiful nature that has been the friend of Danyang Station. That's why this place looks so innocent and cheerful, like a mountain boy who has never known loneliness.

Danyang Station ⇒ Sangseonam Rock, Jungseonam Rock, Haseonam Rock(18.1 km)
Turn left at Danyang Station and take Route 5, then turn right at the Bukha Three-way intersection and go down Route 36.
After crossing the Danyang 1-gyo bridge, turn left at the Wuhwa Three-way intersection and follow Route 59 to Seonamgyegok Valley, which was named " Samseongugok" by Toegye Yi Huang, saying that it is the place where gods used to stroll. In particular, there are spots along the valley that have exceptionally beautiful scenery as if they were footprints left by gods, and they are called Sangseonam Rock, Jungseonam Rock, and Haseonam Rock.

Haseonam Rock is the first scenic spot to show off the beauty of the deep mountains and valleys. Haseonam Rock, which is a round, large rock sitting on a wide rock with three levels, shows off a spectacular view every season, and many Joseon Dynasty painters captured its beauty in their canvases. Jungseonam Rock is the center of Samseongugok, and the sight of silky waves flowing over the white rocks that have been polished by the wind and water for thousands or even tens of thousands of years is a sight that still attracts people.

The last part of the Samseongugok is the Sangseonam Rock. The combination of large rocks and small rocks makes the scenery very nostalgic, as it reminds us of ourselves living together amid the vastness of nature.
Danyang Station ⇒ Danyang Jeokseong Fortress(8.2㎞)
Views of the Danyang Jeokseong Fortress, Directions to the Danyang Jeokseong Fortress
The Danyang Jeokseong Fortress is Historic Site No. 265 and was built during the reign of King Jinheung of Silla (545~551).

It is a semi-moon-shaped stone castle site and was the site of a relatively large castle of 932 meters. Its construction method is very solid, and it is evaluated as a valuable resource for researching Silla construction techniques. From Danyang Station, turn left onto Route 5, then turn right at the Bukha 3-way intersection onto Route 36. Cross the Jungang Expressway and head to the Danyang Rest Area on the Seoul-bound side, and beyond the rest area, you'll see the Danyang Jeokseong Fortress reaching for the sky, winding around the waist of the mountain. As you get closer, you'll be surprised by its size and length. It is said to be relatively large for a mountain castle of the Three Kingdoms period.

The climb up to the castle is relatively steep and physically demanding, but it's worth it to enjoy the panoramic view of Danyang that stretches out behind you. As you walk up the mountain, you'll wonder how they managed to carry all those stones up the mountain. Even using all of our mathematical and scientific common sense, it's still hard to figure out. Then, as soon as you see the view from the top of the mountain against the sky, you are mesmerized by the scenery below your feet.
Danyang Station ⇒ Dodamsambong Peaks and Stone Gate(7.8㎞)
Dodamsambong Peaks on the Namhangang River consists of three peaks with a graceful hexagonal pavilion at the head. Dodamsambong Peaks, one of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang, consists of three peaks.
Walking upstream from Dodamsambong Peak, after climbing about 300 meters, take a breath at the observation deck, and walk a few meters to the Stone Gate that looks like a rainbow in the sky. You can see the blue waves of the Namhangang River through the large gate, and the view from the top of the gate is also spectacular.
Danyang Station ⇒ Ondal Tourist Park(25.9㎞)
Ondal Tourist Park is a theme park built around the historical background and legend of Princess Pyeonggang and General Ondal, a famous Goguryeo general.

In particular, Ondalsanseong Fortress, which offers a spectacular view, is the place where the legend of Ondal the Fool and Princess Pyeonggang begins. From Danyang Station, turn right and take Route 5 to the Sangji Interchange and turn right. Follow Route 59 and turn right at the Gungangyo Bridge Three-way intersection to Provincial Road 522. Cross the Yeongchungyo Bridge and follow Provincial Road 595 to Ondal Tourist Park, where the legend of Ondal and Pyeonggang is told. As you climb up to Ondalseonseong Fortress and gaze out at the scenic view of the Namhangang River winding its way through the landscape of Danyang, you can feel the strong spirit of the Goguryeo warriors, who navigated the harsh mountains and showed off their courage, energizing your tired body and mind.

At the foot of Seongsan Mountain, where Ondalsanseong Fortress is located, there is the Ondaldonggul Cave, which is estimated to have been created about 450 million years ago. Unlike other famous caves, it has small, narrow passages and petite stalactites, so it has a charm that makes the viewer feel comfortable and cozy rather than overwhelming charisma.
You'll find yourself humming softly in the darkness of the cave, enjoying a relaxing time.
