During the reign of King Nulji (417-458), the 19th king of Silla, Mukhoja, who spread Buddhism in Silla, built a temple called Hyangsansa Temple, and when he passed into nirvana, his disciples built a stone pagoda in its place and enshrined Mukhoja's sari.
After the temple burned down during the Imjin War, the site remained in ruins for more than 400 years, and only Treasure No. 405, the three-story Hyangsan-ri stone pagoda, retains its original appearance. Porcelain carvings and tiles scattered around the pagoda indicate that it was once a temple, but there are no traces of the temple. The pagoda was in ruins around 1935 when the sari inside were stolen, and the villagers rebuilt it.
